What Is Paratransit Bus Service?

It is a curb-to-curb, shared-ride transportation service for riders who are unable to use the regular fixed route bus service due to disability or age. Riders must call to reserve their trip before the day they want to ride.

“Curb-to-curb” means the vehicle pulls up to the curb in front of the rider’s home (or other location) for pick-up, and drops them off at the curb in front of their destination.

“Shared-ride” means that multiple riders are transported at the same time.

Paratransit Services:

American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) Paratransit – Trips must begin and end at points within ¾ of a mile of a Howard Transit or Connect-A-Ride fixed route. Neighbor Ride

Neighbor Ride, established in 2004, is a non-profit supplemental transportation program (STP) serving Howard County residents age sixty and older, a population that is projected to increase dramatically over the next twenty years. Because a significant number of older Americans no longer drive, they often stay at home cutting themselves off from the activities and interaction that provide quality to their lives. Neighbor Ride’s mission is to decrease this isolation and improve the quality of life for Howard County’s older residents by providing a reasonably priced, reliable supplemental transportation service which utilizes community volunteers and resources.

Neighbor Ride provides door-to-door transportation for medical appointments, religious services, recreational and social events, exercise and academic classes, volunteer and employment obligations, shopping and other day-to-day activities. Services are available to age-eligible county residents, regardless of ability to pay. Volunteer Ride Coordinators handle intake and scheduling functions. All transportation is provided by a team of volunteer drivers, using their personal vehicles.
